Insurance law

The most common questions in insurance law concern liability for damage. The insurance system makes it possible to protect oneself against a wide range of losses of various kinds. The main purpose of insurance for the policyholder is to provide financial security against certain risks and unexpected losses. Insurance intended to compensate for damage to certain property is usually referred to as non-life insurance. In addition to non-life insurance, there is insurance of a more specialised nature, such as liability insurance, whereby the policyholder can insure against the risk of being liable for damages. Credit insurance enables entrepreneurs to insure themselves against credit losses and similar business risks and property crime insurance against the risk of embezzlement and similar offences by employees. Another more specialised form of cover is legal expenses insurance, which pays the insured’s legal costs in disputes and court cases.

Disputes over compensation may arise in connection with or after the settlement of a claim, and the issues may range from the interpretation of the terms and conditions of the insurance policy, the scope of cover, to questions of limitation and evidence.
