Association law

The law of associations deals with the rules that apply to different types of organisations. These include, for example, sports clubs, kennel clubs, trade unions, free churches and various interest organisations. They all have in common that they are persons or companies working for a common purpose: non-profit associations, economic associations and community associations are the most common types. Community associations differ from other organisations in that they manage a facility that is common to a certain number of properties.

In Sweden, it is common for larger organisations to be structured as a pyramid, with clubs – where individuals are members. The clubs are in turn members of district associations, which in turn are members of an umbrella association, which is the organisation’s highest body.

As a board member of an association, a variety of issues may arise that bring you into contact with the law. These may be questions before an association meeting, uncertainty about how the statutes should be interpreted, or questions about how disputes between a member and the association should be resolved.

NORMA handles all legal issues that may arise within an association. We offer assistance with conversions to housing rights, the formation, merger or winding up of an association, and the drafting, interpretation and amendment of statutes – to name but a few examples.

Our lawyers have extensive experience of court proceedings and disputes that may arise within an association, as well as handling associations in financial crisis. NORMA can help you with our broad expertise in all association-related matters.
